Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The HIPAA Privacy Rule recognizes the legitimate need for public health authorities and others responsible for ensuring public health and safety to have access to protected health information to carry out their public health mission. The Privacy Rule permits covered entities (licensed medical providers, nurses, hospitals, laboratories, etc.) to disclose protected health information, without authorization to public health authorities that are legally authorized to receive such reports for the purpose of preventing or controlling disease, injury, or disability. See 45 CFR 164.512(b)(1)(i).

Health Alert Network
Each Health District in the state maintains a registry of approved health care workers, first responders, and community officials to be contacted in the event of a health related emergency such as a natural disaster or a bioterrorism event. Through the Health Alert Network (HAN) information can quickly be disseminated in the event of a public health emergency.

If you are a qualified health care worker, first responder, or community official and would like to be an active user of the HAN system, please click here: Health Alert Network System
