Drinking Water Program
By definition, any water system that has at least fifteen (15) service connections or regularly serves an average of at least twenty-five (25) individuals daily at least sixty days out of the year is a Public Water System (PWS). In Idaho, if a water supply meets the definition of a PWS, it is required to be regulated by the local public health districts. The health district fulfills this regulation requirement by conducting sanitary surveys, aiding with monitoring compliance requirements, and by providing technical assistance to both the PWS and to private residences. A monitoring schedule is written for the PWS, reflecting the water system's classification. Monitoring the water protects not only the public that uses the system but it also protects the water purveyor from liability that may result if someone were to get sick from using the system.
